February 3, 2012 – April 28, 2012
From February 3 – April 28, 2012 the Vision & Voice Documentary Workspace of the Vermont Folklife Center will host Invisible Odysseys.
Invisible Odysseys was conceived by B. Amore, artist and writer, and implemented in conjunction with Susannah McCandless, geographer, and Ethan Mitchell, independent scholar. These individuals brought paints, mixed media materials and wooden boxes to Mexican farm workers in Addison County, Vermont to create this project. The result is 14 autobiographical dioramas in which the artists (farmworkers) express their journeys from Mexico to Vermont and their lives as undocumented workers in a foreign community. The exhibit includes text in Spanish and English of each artist’s story.
Public programming to support the exhibit will include a workshop for middle and high school educators with VFC folklorist and Director of Education Gregory Sharrow; a graduate level course at Castleton State College with Cheryl Mitchell and Greg Sharrow; a panel discussion with members from our partner organizations about the needs of the undocumented Mexican workers’ community; a panel discussion on the role of the faith community; a screening of the documentary film "Under the Cloak of Darkness," at a local venue; and a workshop with artist B. Amore for the general public on creating autobiographical dioramas.
