Photographer and oral historian Forrest Holtzapfel conceived of A Deep Look at a Small Town in response to the work of 19th century rural village photographers. The exhibit pairs black and white images of the residents of the town of Marlboro, Vermont made with an 8" x 10" view camera with audio interviews conducted by Holzapfel in 2000 and 2001.

As Holzapfel explains, "In 1999 I photographed two hundred different Marlboro families standing in front of their houses and compiled short biographies of each family. The town of Marlboro is both my hometown and a place Iím defining through my photographs. The sum of all my work will create a balance between documentation of our present time and an 'imaginative history' of this 230 year-old town. My objective is to create a rich and complex sense of place."

In the words of author Howard Frank Mosher, "A Deep Look at a Small Town: Marlboro, Vermont, is marvelous: original, important, full of striking images, and alive with history, a great sense of family, and of the connection between the land and the people."

The Presenting Sponsor for this exhibit is Marlboro College. Please join us for an opening reception on May 21st from 5 Ė 7 pm. The Vision & Voice Documentary Workspace is located in the Vermont Folklife Centerís headquarters building at 88 Main Street in Middlebury.
