On My Own: The Traditions of Daisy Turner (DVD)

Daisy Turner, at the age of 103, recalls her childhood in Grafton, Vermont and stories her parents told her about life during the Civil War era. The accompanying teacher's guide, included on the DVD release as a PDF file, provides an overview of the content and discussion suggestions for using the Daisy Turner video and audio recordings in a classroom setting. The guide also outlines units on storytelling and on researching African American history in New England.

The Abenaki of Vermont

The activities delineated in the teacher's guide address a number of specific state-mandated educational standards, including civic and social responsibility, history and social sciences, biology, environmental science/ecology, writing, research and interviewing skills, and math. The teacher's guide also includes a section on evaluating children's books for anti-Indian bias and an annotated bibliography and resource list.

Recording Words: Collecting Oral History and the Art of Interviewing

Drawing on the interviewing experience of VFC folklorists Jane Beck and Gregory Sharrow, Recording Words is a "how-to" guide for people who are interested in oral history research. This volume presents the basic components of an oral history project, from choosing a topic to preserving the recordings, as well as reflections on the role of memory and learning from elders. The appendix includes such practical materials as sample release forms, guidelines for transcription, and bibliography of related resources. A "must" for oral history researchers.
