Although often obscured, relationships lie at the very heart of the documentary endeavor. How refreshing, then, to see the photographic work of Mary Johnson where the issue of relationship is front and center. No images of anonymous subjects here, but rather two very different photographic series that reflect Mary's long-term knowledge of her subjects and her up-close involvement in their everyday lives.

The Vermont Folklife Center shares common cause with Mary as we each strive to understand and represent the diversity of human experience, ethically and respectfully, from an insider's point of view.
