Created by advanced photography and digital media students from the Johnson State College photography program led by acclaimed photographer John Miller, the images of Time Well Spent document both people and process. Central to the exhibit are intimate, personal portraits of residents of the Craftsbury Community Care Center where the project was staged. But the exhibit also documents the evolving relationships that developed between photographers and their subjects through weekly visits over the course of a semester. As a visual record of youth and elders coming to know each other across the sometimes-alienating differences of age, Time Well Spent offers a meditation on the meaning of community and paean to our common humanity.
On Saturday, June 28, from 10:00 to 3:00, Miller and Johnson State College students who created Time Well Spent will join forces in a seminar presentation with photographer Carley Stevens-McLaughlin and Spaulding High School students who participated in Across the Generations: The Barre Portrait and Oral History Project. The seminar will include presentations by both project leaders and student photographers, exploring the long-term impact of service learning projects such as these and the ways in which photo-documentary work can be deeply personal and self-enriching.
Student photographers whose work is featured in Time Well Spent include Adam Bagdon, Richard Bowen, Samantha Frary, Caitlin Graham, James Mannix, Robyn Midi, Martina Pochop, Sarah Purcell, Julie Santos, Cynthia Tokos, and Lindsay Wheeler. Student image editors and printers for the exhibit include Brian Coon, Natalija Fleury, Rob Getek, Aaron Kennison, Sara McKouen, Jean New, Stephen Shanks, and Lindsay Wheeler.
