Now on exhibit in the Vermont Folklife Center’s Vision & Voice Documentary Workspace: Burlington Then and Now, a multimedia project exploring Burlington’s past, present, and future. Created by a fourth and fifth grade team at Burlington’s Champlain School, this project was designed to both learn about the history of Burlington neighborhoods and reflect on ways to sustain strong communities in the future.
As a first step, Champlain School, students identified photographs of their neighborhoods in the UVM Landscape Change Program, then selected key locations that they could identify in the present and photographed these sites from the same perspectives as the original image. The exhibit includes twenty-one panels, each of which pairs an historic and a contemporary image of the same site with student writing about the changes they observed. The exhibit also features students’ audio essays on learning from the past to plan for the future.
Burlington Then and Now will be on display February 20, 2009 through May 1, 2009 in the Vision and Voice Documentary Workspace at the Vermont Folklife Center’s headquarters in Middlebury. Gallery hours are 10 to 5 Tuesday through Saturday. The gallery is free and open to the public. School groups can plan a visit by calling (802) 388-4964 or writing to info@vermontfolklifecenter.org.
