General support for programs and events related to the exhibit In Their Own Words: Stories from Refugees Settled in Vermont Communities provided by the following programs, departments and student organizations of Middlebury College:

The Treehouse Fund, PALANA, History Department, Geography Department, American Studies Department, the Alliance for Civic Engagement, Amnesty International, and Stand Up!.

The Association of Africans Living in Vermont: Refugee
Resettlement and its Challenges

March 6, 7:00 pm

Middlebury College

Association of Africans Living in Vermont Director George Wright and members of the Association, Naweza Muderhwa and Bol Gai, will speak about their organization, the community it serves and the challenges of being an African refugee in Vermont.

In Their Own Words: Refugees Tell Their Stories of Displacement and Resettlement in Vermont

People featured in the ongoing exhibit In Their Own Words will speak in person about the experience of resettlement specifically to this place.  What challenges do they face here and how are Vermont communities affected by their presence?

Photographer Ned Castle and Vermont Folklife Center Education Director Gregory L. Sharrow will offer an introduction and orientation to the exhibit for area educators.

 

In Their Own Words Exhibit Gallery Talk

Ned Castle who created the images and conducted the interviews for In Their Own Words will discuss the project: motivation, artistic and ethnographic processes, community connections, curricular ties, and long-term vision.

 

The Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program

March 20, 7:00 pm

Middlebury College

Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program Director Judy Scott and David Tabaruka, a refugee from Rwanda, will discuss the organization of the statewide refugees resettlement program, and the experience of refugees in Vermont communities.

The Social Equity Investment Project: A Prescribed Solution to
Cultural Shifting

Wanda Hines of the Burlington Community and Economic Development Office will talk about the cultural shift that is occurring in the Champlain Valley and what we must do to ensure equality and respect for all. The influx of refugees is a huge factor in the changes we are seeing today.

 

Helping My Homeland From Afar: the New Sudan Education
Initiative

April 10, 4:30 pm
Chateau, Grand Salon
Middlebury College

Sudanese refugee and activist Abraham Awolich of the New Sudan Education Initiative will talk about NESEI, its mission, its importance to the local Sudanese community, and what it means to him.

Middlebury Students and Faculty on African Refugees

April 15, 6:00 pm
Ilsley Public Library
75 Main Street, Middlebury, VT
 
Middlebury College students from African countries will be joined by African Studies professors for an evening of sharing stories and discussing issues relating to refugees from Africa.
