Events in the After Attica Program Series will examine the services offered that help Vermonters make the transition from prison back to everyday life. Each event features the reflections of both the people who staff the organization as well as those who participate in the organization’s program.

Dismas House: The Community’s Approach To Greater Public Safety

Presenters: Dismas of Vermont director Rita Whalen McCaffrey, Rutland Drug Court Judge the Honorable Francis B. McCaffrey, and a former Dismas House residentDismas of Vermont has been offering transitional post-prison housing in Vermont for the past twenty-four years, beginning with 10 beds in 1986. Today, there are three houses and three satellite apartments (in Burlington, Rutland and Winooski) that add up to forty-two Dismas beds and a great savings to taxpayers.
Return House

Presenters: Return House director Jill Remby and current and former participants in the Return House program.Return House is a residential reentry program that provides a comprehensive array of support services for young men between the ages of 18 and 22 who are returning to the Barre City community from jail. The program can house up to 10 young men at a time. Return House is a program of the Washington County Youth Service Bureau/Boys & Girls Club.

Return House
Women Building Better Lives

Presenters: Tiffany Rhynard (Visiting Professor of Dance at Middlebury College) and others involved with the project.
Women Building Larger Lives is a feature-length documentary chronicling the journey of four women participating in the Modular Home Building Program at Southeast State Correctional Facility (SESCF). The program gives incarcerated women the carpentry, plumbing, and electrical skills necessary to build an affordable modular home. The now 75 women who have participated in the program not only build a home from frame to finish, they gain valuable life coping techniques.
Women Building Larger Lives is an independent project of sisters Kim Brittenham and Tiffany Rhynard. The film documents this groundbreaking program while simultaneously telling the transformative story of four strong women as they cope with life inside prison and their transition as they reenter society.

Women Building Better Lives
Northern Lights

Presenters: Northern Lights director Cara Gleason and current participants in the Northern Lights program.
Northern Lights is a home for women retuning from prison to Burlington Vermont. Each woman works to build a safe and productive life in the community, while under the supervision of the Department of Corrections. Residents are supported by community members, service providers, and their housemates as they develop skills, seek employment, improve their health, and make positive connections.
